Take a close-up look at an ant's powerful pair of antennae! These sensitive structures contain organs for touching and smelling, and are an ant's primary tools for communication within their colony. By producing scent chemicals known as "pheromones", ant antennae are finely tuned to help them locate the scent trails which will lead them back to friends, food, or their own underground communities. In fact, every individual ant colony has its own specific scent! Next time you see a trail of ants outdoors, watch them closely: you may see them touch each other's heads with their antennae in order to communicate!
